Borrego Springs, CA

I was just looking for a cheap spot, with no animals and no responsibilities. Well, actually, I did have a lot of work to get caught up on, but it was a nice break for a few days to not have to deal with anyone’s pet. I really wanted to do the housesitting for a full year, but I’m starting to long for home. I’m actually longing for my recliner couch, and not having to figure out a new TV configuration every where I go! So this was a good break to just chill out.

Borrego Springs is a very small town in CA, out in the middle of nowhere, next to the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea was once a big Hollywood playground and now it’s just a scary, creepy, pretty gross area. A few years ago, my friend and I thought we would paddle board out there. There was an algae infestation and skeletons of fish, birds and barnacles all over the ‘beach’. So yeah, been there done that, never going back.

But, while we were out there, we discovered Borrego Springs. Some local philanthropist decided he wanted to liven up the desert landscape and hired Ricardo Breceda to create a bunch of sculptures and put them all over the desert out there. The best way I heard it described was that it was like a scavenger hunt. Every time I come out, I find new ones, and apparently they are still going up. There was quite a hubub in town about the new scorpion and roadrunner sculptures. Most of these pictures are from a few years ago, but you get the idea. Some are cute and fun, and some are just plain freaky.

It rained for 2 full days, but that’s ok, I had a fireplace! When the sun finally came out, there was a beautiful clear blue sky. It’s also a Dark Sky Community, so there were plenty of stars to see. This was a good trip, I had a good break, and I got a lot of work done! Onward…

Good God Jim!
