Walla Walla, WA

The drive from Portland to Walla Walla was gorgeous, all along the Columbia River. Great views of Mt. Hood sticking up out of the clouds. I was amazed at how many dams there were along the route. It is a big ass river and I guess you’ve got to keep it under control, and hey .. more power to you :). I wonder if anyone gets these stupid jokes?!

For some reason, in my head, I thought Walla Walla was a much bigger place. Maybe because its so nice, they named it twice, I dont know. Its a pretty small city, named after Walawalałáma:  “People of the Walula region along the Walla Walla River”.  I didn’t know that either.

Among the ‘many’ famous people from Walla Walla, I only knew Drew Bledsoe (NFL Quarterback), who returned to Walla Walla to open up a winery. There are 120 wineries in the Walla Walla Valley.

I left Portland late afternoon, and arrived in Walla Walla around 9pm. It was an easy drive, with the magic hour light highlighting the rivers and wheat fields. I was welcomed at my sit with, you guessed it, a glass of wine! My host had a very impressive wine rack and generously gave me a few bottles of some of the local fermentation. To be clear the wine rack was impressive because it was filled.

I visited Mill Creek and Bennington Lake, which was only about a 10 min drive. It was a beautiful area, and curious about Mill Creek, I learned this is a fish ladder!

My pup was a 140 lb 9 year old Mastiff. She was very sweet, and very large, and getting on in age, as we all are. She thinks she’s a person and acts accordingly.

I like Walla Walla, plenty of space. Not sure I’d live there unless I became a wine connoisseur. My friends can tell you, I’ve tried, and although I like wine, its just not really my thing.

Short sit, time to move on….

Good God Jim!

  2. Ah, Drew Bledsoe, first overall pick in the 1993 draft, but what he’s known for is being the QB that Tom Brady replaced. Kind of reminds me of Kyle Orton…
